Guinea Pig Metronidazole
Guinea Pig Metronidazole (also known as Flagyl) may be prescribed by your Veterinarian for many reasons. One of the common reasons is to treat infections of the GI Tract known as Protozoa or Flagellates. It is in fact an Antibiotic which contains Anti-Inflammatory properties which can also help treat IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
Like many other drugs on the market Metronidazole is Not a licensed medicine for the use on animals. Saying that it has been used on the market to treat bacteria and protozoa infections within animal medicine without any complications.
How do I Administer this Medicine to my animal?
Administer this drug exactly how your Veterinarian has prescribed it. If you miss giving your Guinea Pig its regular dose you must adhere to the following guidelines :-
- If the next does is close by administer this dose and continue on with the regular schedule (Some Veterinarians will prescribed either Once Daily (Every 24 hours) or Twice daily (Every 12 hours).

Common Side Effects
The most common side affects are related to the Digestive Tract and may be a combination of any of the following :-
- Vomiting (Not in Guinea Pigs/Rabbits
- Decreased Appetite
Rare Side Effects
- Low White Blood Cell Count
- Liver Problems
- Blood In Urine
High Doses or Long Term Therapy may cause problems such as :-
- Loss Of Co-
If your Guinea Pig is caged outside the house it would be recommended to house them temporally indoors so you can monitor for all of the possible side affects as listed above.
- This drug must only be used on the Guinea Pig it was prescribed for.
- Do Not Double dose in the case of a missed dose, Their should be a at least a 12 hour gap if Medicating twice Daily
The recommended dosage for a Guinea Pig is 20-25mg/kg of body weight twice daily. In the UK Metronidazole Oral Suspension is dispensed in 200mg per 5ml dosage. Therefore the recommended dosage would be 0.5ml twice daily.
If your Veterinarian Prescribes a higher dose then stated please question this. A guinea pig was put to sleep due to high dose being prescribed leading to seizures.
